Software Check
"I can’t view or open this file!" Files are classified by the use of a three- or sometimes four-character "extension" at the end. A Microsoft Word document might be named letter.doc and the extension .mov can be used to classify a QuickTime movie. When you ask your computer to open a file, it checks to see which software program should be used.
Most common file types will already be "associated" with a particular program on your computer, which should accurately present its contents. Sometimes, these associations may be incorrect or not even present at all. This can occur if a particular program has "stolen" the association, or if your computer never had the correct software for that file installed. For example, you might receive an email message with an attachment, and you see a pop-up box when trying to open it that asks which program you would like to use to view the file.
The table below aims to help you restore or acquire the correct software for some of the major file types that you may come across. There are many more types than those listed below. However, they should already be associated with a program on most computers. If the required type is not listed, please use the contact info page to ask for more information.
Please note:
1. There is no connection or affiliation to any of the following software programs and companies.
2. The software programs listed here are widely used for each type, though alternatives do exist.
